Russell Henderson's involvement in the Alexandra community began at age 18 when he opened his first store. Later he became involved in many community organisatons including, Rotary, Lions and Freemasons. In the 1970's he established Ranui Home.
In 1974 the well recognised Henderson Trust was started. Russell and his wife Barbara, later opened their home as a retreat for New Zealand artists.
During the 150th Commonwealth celebrations, Russell's ongoing involvement in the community was acknowledged with a medal for contributions to the community. Additionally, he was given a 60 year Jewel from the Freemasons.
Russell died in 1998.
