Below is text taken from the website promoting the 150yr celebration of the discovery of gold in Central Otago and specifically the Nevis Valley. Attached to this topic are several images taken from the weekend.
The Nevis Valley Gold Rush occurred in 1862, now 150 years on this beautiful and rugged landscape will host a variety of events to celebrate this milestone. Come for a day trip or camp the whole weekend.
Family Histories
A marquee is to be set up with profiles of many families histories of those involved with gold mining and associated activities over the last 150 years. This will also include the history of mining, dredges, the social life, including picnics, the horse races, the tennis clubs and musical entertainment as well as the dances.
Old Post Office
A replica of the Old Post Office with a Post Master present will be in operation, you will be able to post a letter and receive a post mark plus read the history of the postal service over the year including how the gold and mail were transported. Postcards with old Nevis photos will be available for purchase.
Blacksmith
A Blacksmith will be on site demonstrating his craft, watch and learn how he produced items essential for life 150 years ago.
Guided Tours
Guided tours will be held of both the Upper and Lower Nevis, this will include slucings, tailings, holes, water races plus coal and mining equipment. Click here for more info.
Food
BBQ food will be available for purchase via club fund raisers.
Gold Panning
Gold Panning – Demonstrations will be held then participation encouraged to learn all the techniques of how to successfully pan for Gold

The time it was dug was the golden moment of their team, literally. Today gold is very rare to find, even mining station have hard time looking. But we do not need to look for gold, because we do not realize the gold are around us already, our family, work and relatonships.
